Limited Edition Chicken & Waffles Oreo Cookies

Thanks for reading my once-in-a while blog where I report on a new snack food I've discovered. I'm a children's book author with a habit of chowing down on bags of chips to power the creative circuits in my brain. Sometimes I enlist the assistance of others to do a taste test with me. Such was the case when I brought a package of Chicken & Waffles Oreo Cookies to the monthly Ladies Lunch.

Each month the women on my block organize a lunch at someone's home. It's a great way to get together, catch up with neighbors and share a few laughs. We've been getting more and more elaborate with our lunches This month was "wear something in your closet that you never get to wear." Guests were left to interpret this theme in many different ways. One lady wore a graduation gown. Another lady wore a hat she bought on vacation as a souvenir.

Another found something in her closet that she was given as a gag gift.

I wore a pair of platform shoes and a dress I bought over a decade ago that still has the price tag on it.

It was quite the misfit fashion show that kept us all giggling. And it was the perfect opportunity to introduce a snack that no one at the party had ever tried ( or wished to try) - Chicken & Waffles Oreo Cookies. Chicken & Waffles itself seems like a gastronimical faux pas. Like wearing argyle with stripes.

Appearance: the cookie seemed promising. It had a strong scent of maple syrup. I liked the waffle texture on one side of the cookie.

Taste: SWEET! I tasted a sweet cookie. But here's the thing. Since it's presented as chicken and waffles, many of us were on alert - waiting for a chicken flavor to come through. Some of the tasters didn't finish the cookie - perhaps too turned off by the thought of chicken in a cookie. Some said they tasted the chicken and that was enough for them. I eventually detected a very faint hint of spice. This came after finishing the cookie which was overwhelmingly sweet. I looked at the ingredients and there are no chicken products used at all. But there are some spices like black pepper, celery, paprika and smoke flavor. I didn't get a chicken and waffles kind of experience, but rather a maple syrup cookie with a smidge of pepper.

Conclusion: While there were a few lukewarm thumbs up, the majority of tasters were less than thrilled with the Chicken & Waffles Oreo. The flavors don't go together and there's no good occasion to eat a Chicken & Waffles Oreo.

And so these cookies will likely just sit in my pantry in the unlikely event that one day I will crave chicken and waffles in cookie form. A fate similar to the platform shoes that are waiting for a party to go to. And the little black dress that still has the price tags on it.
